I enjoyed not only the photos of the characters in the
Crumbsnatcher Gets a Name Series, I enjoyed watching and listening
to the DVD as well. As an educator with 23 years of experience, I
see this series as an effective teaching tool in the following
areas: Grades 1-5, Character Education; Grades 5-9, speculative
writing preparation for the New Jersey Grade Eight Proficiency
Assessment and Newark’s Standard Proficiency Assessment for Grade 9
students. Educators who purchase the photos and the DVD will be

Who lives in Bird
Town?
Bird Town is bursting with
diversity. Birds that you have never heard of live there. Each
family lives on a different branch of a large tree.
Yet, in the bark of the tree in a
very dark hole is the Bird Hang Out.
Who hangs out in Bird Hang
Out?
Members of some of the finest
families in the tree hang out in bird hangout. These birds do not
work. Some
occasionally steal when their families refuse to feed
them.
Who is Crumbsnatcher
Finch?
Crumbsnatcher is part of the Finch
family. He sports a little cap on his head and little sneakers to
help him run away from the nests when he has stolen crumbs. He
simply does not fly because he is much too lazy or just never
learned how to use his natural ability.
Crumbsnatcher Hangs Out in Bird
Hangout
Crumbsnatcher is a frequent visitor to bird
hangout, steals the crumbs from other birds nests when they are at
work in the Crumb Factory. This episode does not deal with his
history or why he became a Crumbsnatcher. It is suspected that his
selfish attitude and “I want my own way” feelings could have
something to do with his behavior. But the story does not do an
analysis.
Who is Strong Share
Hummingbird?
Strong Share Hummingbird is a strong
bird with muscles. He is strong in sharing and strong in good
advice. He also has a kind spirit that reaches out to help other
birds in bird hang out instead of shunning them.
How do the two birds
meet?
One day Crumbsnatcher runs into a
tree. “Ouch”. In the
midst of the stars going around his head, Strong Share Hummingbird
approaches him. Strong Share, a bird that shares his advice and
help to others, tries to encourage Crumbsnatcher to change his
misguided ways. Strong Share’s advice works! Crumbsnatcher has
finally joined the ranks of the working class and leaves bird
hangout.
Where is the
drama?
What is a storybook with out some
kind of drama? Some very bad children start throwing stones at
the hard working birds gathering crumbs. Crumbsnatcher who has
changed his attitude from selfishness to sharing warns Strong Share
of an incoming stone missile that is aimed at his heart.
Crumbsnatcher Saves A
Life
Because of the keen alertness of
Crumbsnatcher a stone meant for his heart only hits his
wing.
Crumbsnatcher also yells out for
help to Ms. Sarah who provides the crumbs daily for the Crumb
Factory. Ms. Sarah picks up the hurt Strong Share and repairs his
wing. But not before yelling at the children and scattering them
away
How does Crumbsnatcher get a
new name?
Ms. Sarah , who understands bird talk, tells Crumbsnatcher
how proud she is of his new attitude and courage. She gives him a
new name called “Mighty Care” because he cared for
someone else besides himself.
What about the famous wingy
dingy song and dance?
The story ends with Mighty Care
Finch, aka Crumbsnatcher and Strong Share singing and dancing on
the window ledge outside of Ms. Sarah’s window. While the birds
whistle their song the narrator interprets the lyrics. Then the
narrator describes the catching song that everyone loves to dance
to. The pictures, although non-animated, shift to show the dance
movements of the birds.
It’s “Push out the beaks, flapping
of the wings and sliding of the feet. Anyone who listens to this
strum, thrum and lively bouncy song will chant it all day
long.

artwork?
Artist Ray Horner
Jr. uses his award winning artwork to create memorable bird
characters. Unlike fast moving animations, this storybook DVD
allows it’s viewer to enjoy the awe inspiring watercolor
illustrations. This results in the viewer expanding their
imagination.. Crumbsnatcher Gets A New Name has a broad appeal to
children as well as adults.
It is an adaptation a story written
by his wife, Rosie Horner. This story comes alive in a celebration
of friendship, learning and growing up.
This story took me back to my childhood! It was very
refreshing to watch and listen to a story with a moral.
Crumbsnatcher Gets a New Name addresses the dilemmas that our
children face to day while reminding us (parents and concerned
adults) about our responsibility to model positive behavior for our
children.
